Madrid, Spain – November 25, 2023 – The most important class of the second day of the 2023 IFEMA Madrid Horse Week was the €100,000 Estrella Damm Trophy CSI 5*-W. The first round had 12 clear rounds and all of them competed in the Winning Round format.

The winning round had a course designed for galloping with four turns where precision was crucial. It began with a swift performance by Niels Bruynseels (BEL) with and Nauwsika van de Pereboom. Shortly after, Max Kühner (AUT), aiming to extend his success in Madrid, surpassed the time of the Belgian with Eic Julius Caesar.

In the final stretch, Roger-Yves Bost with (ESP) and Ballerine du Vilpion lowered the Austrian’s time of 36.54 seconds, setting a new reference time of 35.72 seconds for the last four pairs. The time set by the Frenchman was lowered by Nicola Philippaerts (BEL) with Derby de Riverland, stopping the timers in 35.28 seconds for what turned out to be the winning performance.

The competition concluded with the world number one, Henrik von Eckermann (SWE), riding Dzara Dorchival, the pair that had won the main class yesterday. After having won the €97,700 Caser Helvetia Group Trophy CSI 5*-W, the Swede tried but fell short at 35.78 seconds, which was insufficient for bronze honors.

Therefore, Nicola Philippaerts claimed victory with Derby de Riverland, a son of “Kannan” that he has been riding for a very short time. Previously, his brother Thibault had competed with him, and he arrived to Madrid with an extraordinary record in the last seven competitions, all with clear rounds. In Madrid the Belgian rider and his 10-year-old confirmed their consistency and competitiveness.

Roger-Yves Bost‘s (FRA) great performance on Ballerine du Vilpion held up for the second place finish in the 1.50m contest.
