Hamburg, Germany – May 18, 2022 – Mario Stevens (GER) deliberately gave his number one stable a long break before the 2023 season started. Starissa is the name of the 10-year-old bay Hanoverian gelding (Stakkato Gold x Quidam’s Rubin) with which the 40-year-old show jumper is currently riding from success to success: “I had a great season with him last year, then I took a three-month break with him. It’s tough for a rider when you have such a great horse,” admits Stevens, “but horses have to regenerate. So Starissa took a three-month break from tournaments, and he thanked me for that. It was a dream of mine to win the championship here and today it came true.”
Second place went to Hans-Dieter Dreher (GER) with the Holsteiner Elysium (VDL Zirocco Blue x Coronado): “I’m super happy with how the horse jumped here. Maybe I could have ridden faster,” he summarized his lap.
Shane Breen (IRL) jumped to third place on Cuick Star Kervec (Quick Star x Diamant de Semilly). The Irishman is a regular guest in Klein Flottbek and is full of praise for the international five-star tournament in Hamburg: “It’s a fantastic tournament, an overwhelming place and a great audience,” said the successful rider. “It’s wonderful to see these great horses and riders here and it’s an honor to be able to compete here.”
The organizers could also see more than satisfied faces: “Today is a great Derby day with wonderful weather and there are many visitors in Derby Park,” says Derby boss Volker Wulff happily. “Advance sales were already around 15 percent higher than in previous years and the way things are now emerging, we will also achieve this advantage at the box office and are heading for a visitor record.”
