Calgary, Alberta, Canada – June 16, 2022– A well rounded field of top international athletes stepped through the ironic Spruce Meadows Clock Tower onto the International Ring for the $37,500 PwC Cup CSI 5*. Thirty-eight horse/rider combinations representing 7 countries were tested over 12 obstacles (15 efforts) at the height of 1.55m meters with a tight time allowed of 72 seconds set by FEI Course Designer Anthony D’Ambrosio (USA) in the first round of competition. Ten of athletes jumped clear and returned for the jump off against the clock.
The jump off belonged to Patricio Pasquel (MEX) who guided his veteran partner Babel to the fastest clear in the jump-off while still leaving all the poles up for no penalties, completing their second performance in 38.73 seconds. Pasquel was ecstatic to return to the winners circle at Spruce Meadows with his 15-year-old chestnut Mexican Sport Horse home bred gelding (Billy du Lys x High Flyer).
Nayel Nassar (EGY) and El Conde (Loro Piana Filou de Muze – Birdy) were the closest ones, matching the clean scorecard of the eventual winners and completing their second effort in 40.01 seconds.
The host nation did managed to earn a top-three finish as Mario Deslauriers (CAN) rode Emerson (Eldorado vd Zeshoek x Berlin) towards bronze honors, backed by a penalty-free jump-off run in 41.36 seconds.
