Hamburg, Germany – The disappointment on all sides was huge that in 2020 the Hamburg Derby (Deutsches Spring- und Dressur-Derby Hamburg), presented by IDEE KAFFEE, could not take place as usual on the 100th birthday of all things, but had to be reduced to a virtual version. The longing for the classic tournament with its indescribable flair is all the greater: the riders, the organizers and also the spectators. In order to have more planning security, it has now been decided in coordination with the city of Hamburg, the Altona district, the sponsors, the public broadcasting company and the North German and Flottbeker Reiterverein (NFR) to deviate from the traditional date. For decades, the week around Ascension Day has been set, but this year the tournament will be postponed to the end of August on the 25th to 29th.
“A tournament like the German Jumping and Dressage Derby is by no means imaginable without a spectator. And to be honest, it cannot be financed either, ”says Volker Wulff, explaining the absolute will to allow the classic tournament to take place with an audience. “We see it as our duty to do everything possible to implement the Derby 2021, we owe it to sponsors and viewers who have shown great loyalty to the Hamburg tournament in this time of crisis.” Christoph Holstein, State Councilor for Sports of the City of Hamburg , supports this decision: “On the part of the City of Hamburg, we also see a significantly greater chance in the second half of the year to hold Hamburg’s traditional events in an almost normal setting. We fully support the decision of the derby organizer. “
The five days of the tournament are to be broadcast analogous to the usual tournament schedule in May and keep the Derby promise to bring world-class equestrian sport to Klein Flottbek. The Longines Global Champions Tour and Global Champions League will be part of the rescheduling and Hamburg will once again be a stop for the prestigious international jumping series at five-star level. The derby tests with the two qualifications, including the prize from Deutsche Kreditbank AG and the legendary, then 91st German Jumping Derby, presented by IDEE KAFFEE, will again inspire. The Mercedes-Benz Championship in Hamburg is also a tradition. And also in the dressage stadium, riders, horses and spectators can feel really comfortable again and cheer for the thrilling final of the Almased 62nd German Dressage Derby – the international Grand Prix with horse change. Enjoy the place, picnic, shop a bit, feast a bit, have a good time – that is also part of the German show jumping and dressage derby. The magnificent Derby Park is unparalleled among the tournament grounds in the world – everyone who has ever been there will confirm that. And the large number of visitors who attend the Derby every year will have sorely missed exactly that. The longing and the hope to see each other again in Klein Flottbek from 25 to 29 August 2021 is all the greater.
