Back-to-Back Victories! Italy Impresses to Claim the Longines Nations Cup CSIO 3* Title in Thessaloniki

Thessaloniki, Greece โ€“ June 07, 2026 โ€“ Italy made it two wins in three days when they successfully defended their title at the Longines EEF Series Region South Qualifier in Thessaloniki (GRE). Germany finished second while Hungary rounded out the podium in third.
ย
The Italians continued the impressive run of form which saw them win the Longines EEF Series Region West Qualifier in Deauville on Friday, leading todayโ€™s competition from start to finish.
ย
โ€œIโ€™m very happy. In Greece we always have a good result. This year it was very difficult to win as there were 10 teams but we fought very well,โ€ said chef dโ€™equipe, Marco Verheyden.
ย
Andreas Stoiberโ€™s tricky course meant clear rounds were at a premium – there were just 16 in total – and only two combinations produced a double clear.
ย
One of those to record two fault free rounds was Italyโ€™s Matteo Zamana (ITA) on the 13-year-old stallion Captain Conner. Joining him in the winning team were Roberto Turchetto (ITA) riding Bubalou and the father and daughter duo of Bruno and Elisa Chimirri (ITA) riding Je Suis Godot dโ€™Acheronte and Cornico respectively.

It was the first time Bruno and Elisa Chimchirri (ITA) were representing Italy on the same team as Elisa, who is only 22 years old, was making her senior nations cup debut.

Elisa Chimchirri (ITA) & Cornico

โ€œIt was amazing to do my first senior nations cup with my father. Iโ€™m very emotional about that, very happy. I will keep this in my heart forever,โ€ said Elisa, who struggled with nerves in the first round and amassed 21 penalties but found her feet in the second with a superb clear.
ย
โ€œIโ€™m very happy about this experience, about how my horse jumped because heโ€™s only nine years old and he jumped amazing. He jumped his heart out. Iโ€™m super proud of him.โ€
ย
Bruno and Roberto were both members of the winning Italian team in Thessaloniki 12 months ago.

At the halfway stage Italy were out in front on four ahead of Germany and Tรผrkiye who were tied on eight faults, just ahead of Brazil on nine.

Bruno Chimirri (ITA) & Je Suis Godot d’Acheronte

ย Three clear rounds from Italyโ€™s first three riders – Matteo Zamana (ITA) on Corte Moline S.R.Lโ€™s Captain Conner, Elisa Chimirri (ITA) with Tower SRLโ€™s grey stallion Cornico and Roberto Turchetto (ITA) riding Lozar Sasโ€™ 15-year-old Hanoverian gelding Bubalou – meant they added nothing to that score in the second and secured victory without final rider – Bruno Chimirri (ITA) and Tower SRLโ€™s 11-year-old stallion Je Suis Godot d’Acheronte – being required to jump.
ย
Germany finished second on 16 faults. Thomas Mang (GER) and Jacqueline Wundererโ€™s 12-year-old mare Grand Zara proved the stars of the German team as they were the only other combination in the competition to record a double clear.
ย
Clear rounds from Hungaryโ€™s final two riders โ€“ Aliz Alasztics (HUN) on My Way VL and Anna Simicska (HUN) aboard Dikanno PS โ€“ helped them climb from fifth at the end of round one to finish third on a score of 20.
ย
Fourth place went to Brazil, who were represented by four members of the same family. Olympic medallist Luiz Felipe de Azevedo (BRA) on Adagio combined with his son Luiz Felipe Cortizo Gonรงalves de Azevedo Filho aboard Sir 99 du Piedroux Z and grandchildren Luiz Francisco de Azevedo (BRA) on Quito and Luiz Felipe Neto de Azevedo (BRA) aboard Valentino Massuere to complete on a score of 28.
ย
Romania, who were fifth, Bulgaria, who came sixth, and Tรผrkiye โ€“ the biggest casualties of the second round โ€“ who finished eventual seventh, all qualified for the South-Central semifinal along with winners Italy and Ukraine, who were 10th.
ย
There was disappointment for the hosts, Greece, who could only manage eighth place, ahead of Slovakia and Ukraine.
