Hamburg, Germany – May 21, 2022 – The Hamburg Derby is considered by many one of the toughest tests of power and endurance in the sport of showjumping and this exciting competition brought to an end the 2023 edition of the Germany Jumping & Dressage Derby. Certainly, when one wins it, it is a lifetime achievement, even better when the victory takes place before your fellow countrymen cheering you on. That`s exactly what Marvin Jüngel (GER) felt on Sunday as he teamed up with Balou’s Erbin towards victory in the 93rd edition of the contest, the €153,000 Idee Kaffee Hamburg Derby CSI 4*.
Thirty-two combinations lined up for 1.55m test on a course designed by Frank Rothenberger (GER) but only two had enough scope and stamina to clear all the obstacles withstand the long course for a clean scorecard. As the 11th to go in the first round, Caroline Rehof Pedersen (DEN) and Calvin 115 (Castelan 3 x Colman) proved that a clean performance was possible, completing the track in 167.90 seconds.
The next twelve combinations all failed to duplicate the feat, including several German riders, leaving most of the attendees in despair. However, there was still hope for a win by the host nation as Marvin Jüngel (GER) and Balou’s Erbin trotted onto the grass arena. And they were sharp in the beginning, mastered the tricky parts and secured a jump-off! Things were back to “normal” as all those who followed had penalty-points incurred to their score.
With the home crowd behind and cheering them on with sighs of relief at every obstacle cleared on the shortened course, Jüngel (GER) and the 14-year-old chestnut Oldenburg mare (Be Bravo x Consul) were supreme by just over a second faster, registerign 56.57 seconds while Caroline and Calvin crossed the finish line at the 57.70 mark.
Benjamin Wulschner (GER) and Bangok Girl PP (Balou du Rouet x Quo Vadis) completed the podium as the fastest four-faulters in the first round, securing the third spot on the podium with their very fast time of 150.80 seconds.
