Doha, Qatar – February 23, 2023 – Five-star showjumping action got off to a great start on Thursday at the CHI Al Shaqab 5*. The first five-star class was held over a course of 1.45m fences and was won by Ireland’s experienced showjumper, Shane Breen (IRL).
Riding Haya, a 2012 grey Royal Dutch Sport Horse / Dutch Warmblood mare (Mylord Carthago x For Pleasure), the Irishman was supreme over the two-phase course, completing the second section of the 1.45m contest in flawless fashion, with the best time of 30.84 seconds.
The next two top spots on the podium would be conquered by two riders who would go on to reverse their placings in the feature class of the day, thus being the two most consistent riders on the first day.
France’s Kevin Staut finished second on Dialou Blue PS ((Diarado’s Boy x Chacco-Blue) while Brazil’s Francisco José Mesquita Musa round out the top three with Carte de Blue PS Marathon. (Cartoon 21 x Chacco-Blue), with each pair respectively registering times of 31.12 seconds and 31.60 seconds.
Winner’s Circle: Shane Breen (IRL)
“I am delighted with this result. Since Haya is quick and has a long stride, I felt this well-spread course layout would suit her. She has the heart of a lion and is super smart, super careful. I have to say that the facilities and canter track here are second-to-none. It’s a great venue, with perfect weather!”
