Hamburg, Germany – May 29, 2022 – A fairytale win and that’s not an understatement, in fact for several reasons. Cassandra Orschel (POL) overcame the odds and past champions to win the €120,000 Hamburg Jumping Derby CSI 4* on Sunday to conclude the 2022 edition of the German Jumping Derby – Deutsches Spring-und-Dressur Derby CSI 4*.
The Polish rider carved her name into the rich history of the Hamburg Derby on Sunday and for several reasons, teaming up with Dacara E, an eleven-year-old chestnut Holsteiner mare (Cancara x Caretino). First, the Polish rider was not amongst the favorites, especially since it was her first time ever participating in one of the most demanding tests of the sport. Moreover, she faced much more experienced riders such as Dermott Lennon (IRL), Shane Breen (IRL) and 2017 champion Pato Muente (SLO).
However, that did not affect her. She became the first woman since 1975 to triumph in one of the most traditional classes of the noble sport. The first-round course caused havoc on the field of competitors, with all combinations having at least one pole down. In the end, Orschel and her very own mare were amongst the four pairs who had 4 penalty-points, thus resulting in a jump-off.
One would think that after a grueling first round that served as a test of power and stamina, it would be too much to ask of any horse to do better. Well, it turned out that the eventual winners did! They were the only ones to registering a flawless second run, thus securing the coveted title.
Frederic Tillmann (GER) and Comanche V. (Cellestial x Loredo) were the closest ones, finishing second as the only combination with four penalty-points in the tiebreaker.
The two remaining finalists had 8 penalty-points each in the decisive round. However, Andre Thieme (GER) and Contadur (Conteros x Kolibi) managed to be faster, securing bronze honors in 50.08 seconds.
