‘s-Hertogenbosch, The Netherlands –The first major of the Rolex Grand Slam of Show Jumping took place this Sunday during The Dutch Masters – Indoor Brabant Horse Show CSI 5*. It was the first Rolex Grand Prix CSI 5* since the CHI of Geneva 5* back in December of 2019. The exciting contest offered genuine top-class sport on Sunday.
Eight combinations managed to reach the jump-off after overcoming all the 1.60m obstacles and completing the course designed by Louis Konickx (BEL) within the time allowed. The eight finalists ensured an unforgettable spectacle but it was Max Kühner (AUT) and Elektrik Blue P who powered their way to victory in the €700,000 Rolex Grand Prix CSI 5*.
The Austrian became the winner with Elektric Blue P, a 10-year-old gelding (Eldorado vd Zeshoek x For Pleasure). Kühner bought Elektric Blue P as a two-year-old at an auction and his investment more than paid off on Sunday. Together the duo laid down the gauntlet, registering a double clear and a final time of 32.52 seconds that could not be matched by any other combination. Like all riders, Kühner was also delighted that The Dutch Masters was organized, despite the adversities due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the recent Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1) outbreak in Europe.
Marlon Módolo Zanotelli (BRA) made a serious attempt to improve Kühner’s time as the last starter, but to no avail. A beautiful second place was the result. He rode VDL Edgar M, a 12-year-old Dutch Warmblood gelding (Arezzo VDL x Marlon) with which he hopes to qualify for the Olympic Games in Tokyo.
Third place was claimed by Christian Kukuk (ger) with Checker 47, an 11-year-old Westphalian gelding (Comme Il Faut) . At the press conference Kukuk looked at Kühner’s beautiful Rolex watch: “Of course it suits me too, but I am happy with the result and I will try to win that watch next time.”
Winner’s Circle – Max Kühner (AUT)
“I am speechless, it’s great to win here, I am really happy,” said the 47-year-old rider from Starnberg. I knew I had to be very fast and trusted my instincts.” “He is doing extremely well and this is of course a great moment, also for him.” Thanks to Rolex and the organisation who made all this possible. They put on a fantastic event despite the difficult conditions of today.”
