A One-Two for Luis Sabino Gonçalves in the $100,000 Inn at the Mission Grand Prix at San Juan Capistrano

San Juan Capistrano, California, USA – Luis Sabino Gonçalves (POR) once again put the Portuguese flag higher than any other while competing out on the west coast of the United States. The Portuguese rider guided Camino Império Egípcio to victory in the $100,000 Gold Tour Grand Prix, sponsored by sponsored by Inn at the Mission San Juan Capistrano, held as the main attraction of the second week of the Blenheim Spring Classic.

Luis Sabino Gonçalves (POR) has made his trip from Portugal to California more than worthwhile. Normally, such a trip would not happen but after the reduction of horse shows elsewhere in the world and being invited by fellow Portuguese rider and friend Bruno Diniz das Neves (POR), he decided to take the long trip. With the advent of both the COVID-19 pandemic and later on the Equine Herpes Virus (EHV-1) that caused horse shows in Europe to be cancelled, the decision to compete in warmer weather made even more sense.

Five combinations cleared all the 1.50m obstacles and crossed the finish line within the time allowed in the first round, thus advancing to the jump-off. Sabino managed to advance to the jump-off aboard two different mounts, winning the class on Camino Império Egípcio. Sabino guided the 11-year-old grey Bavarian Warmblood (Colman x Caretello B) flawlessly a second time, registering the fastest of three double-clear performances, stopping the final timers in 43.122 seconds.

The feat was even great as the Portuguese rider teamed up with Argan de Beliard towards a second place finish. Luis and the 11-year-old Selle Français gelding (Mylord Carthago* HN x Ahorn), the only difference being their final time of 43.525 seconds.

The only other double clear of the contest was achieved by Hanna Mauritzson (SWE) and Parkamore Lux (Lux Z x Coolcorran Cool Diamond), timed in 43.797 seconds.
