Grimaud, France – September 26, 2020 – Belgian riders have showcased their top equestrian skills this year at the Hubside Jumping and it was no different on Saturday. Jérôme Guery (BEL) and Great Britain V claimed top honors in the €55,000 Hubside Jump-off Challenge CSI 5*.

Only three combinations advanced to the jump-off of the 1.55m contest, with the Belgian and the 8-year-old grey Belgian Sport Horse gelding (Nabab de Reve x Carolus II), registering the faster of only two combinations that managed to leave all the poles up in the jump-off.

Marlon Módolo Zanotelli (BRA) and Icarus (Douglas x Sioux de Baugy) were the other duo that posted a double clear, completing their second effort in 39.47 seconds.

Alberto Zorzi (ITA) and Cinsey (Contendro I x For Pleasure) rounded out the top three, having four penalty-points and a time of 38.83 seconds at the end of their jump-off effort.

I am very happy today! It’s a bit of a surprise victory! Great Britain V is only eight years old and has never jumped this level. So I did not at all consider being at the jump-off! In view of the delicacy of the race, I even believe that if I had not started at the very start of the first round, I would not have started the race. The course was difficult, the time very short but in the end my horse did not seem in difficulty at one point! For once, starting at the start of the race was therefore to my advantage!

I was calm when I started off for the jump-off because we were guaranteed a podium. The contract was therefore already more than fulfilled. But starting in number one and as I had not walked the route of the reconnaissance dam at all, I missed my first line a bit. I braked for nine strides while my two competitors were able to do eight strides very easily. After this second jump, I understood that I had to make up for time a little.

I bought Great Britain V about a year ago at the start of his seven year year and I still have a lot of hope in him. Here, he did six or seven weeks of competition and he had to make only one mistake in total! It is truly an exceptional horse as one rarely meets. There aren’t many horses his age capable of jumping events like today’s, let alone winning them.

Jérôme Guery (BEL) et Great Britain V ont volé la vedette à leurs concurrents dans l’épreuve majeure hier à l’Hubside Jumping.

Je suis très heureux aujourd’hui! C’est un peu une victoire surprise ! Great Britain V n’a que huit ans et n’a jamais sauté ce niveau d’épreuve. Je n’avais donc pas du tout envisager d’être au barrage ! Au regard de la délicatesse de l’épreuve, je crois même qui si je n’étais pas parti en tout début de première manche, je n’aurais pas pris le départ de l’épreuve. Le parcours était difficile, le temps très court mais finalement mon cheval n’a pas eu l’air en difficulté à un seul moment! Pour une fois, partir en début d’épreuve a donc été à mon avantage!

J’étais serein en partant au barrage car nous étions assurés d’un podium. Le contrat était donc déjà plus que rempli. Mais en partant en numéro un et comme je n’avais pas du tout marché le tracé du barrage à la reconnaissance, j’ai un peu loupé ma première ligne. J’ai freiné pour faire neuf foulées alors que mes deux concurrents ont pu faire huit foulées très facilement. Après ce deuxième saut, j’ai compris qu’il fallait rattraper un peu le temps.

J’ai donc pris des risques sur la fin du barrage, surtout devant la combinaison car je sais que mon cheval saute très bien ce type d’obstacles. Great Britain sautait de manière exceptionnelle. Mon barrage a certainement mis un peu de pression au deux concurrents suivants. Après la faute d’Alberto Zorzi, j’étais déjà assuré de la deuxième place. Puis j’ai vu que Marlon Modolo Zanotelli assurait un peu le double du barrage et je pense que c’est là qu’il a perdu un peu de temps.J’ai acheté Great Britain V il y a environ un an, au début de son année de sept ans et j’ai toujours beaucoup d’espoir en lui. Ici, il a fait six ou sept semaines de concours et il n’a dû faire qu’une seule faute au total ! C’est vraiment un cheval exception comme on en rencontre rarement. Il n’y a pas beaucoup de chevaux de son âge capables de sauter des épreuves comme celle d’aujourd’hui, et encore moins de les gagner.
