Daniel Coyle & Cita Conquer $40,000 Husky Energy Classic CSI 5* at Spruce Meadows

Daniel Coyle of IRL riding Cita wins the Husky Energy Classic

Calgary, Alberta, Canada – June 13, 2019 – The ‘Continental’ CSI 5* presented by Rolex marks the second week of the 2019 Spruce Meadows Summer Series. Riders from 24 different countries prepared for a week of top international sport on the Meadows on the Green, each hoping to make it to the winner’s circle.

The $40,000 Husky Energy Classic CSI 5* had 62 horse/rider combinations take on the track laid out by FEI Course Designer, Olympic medalist and former Spruce Meadows Champion, Michel Vaillancourt (CAN). The horses took well to the new layout at Meadows on the Green. Eighteen jumped clear to make it into the jump off.

With 18 horses in the jump off riders not only had to complete their jump off ride with no faults, but had to be very fast. Daniel Coyle (IRL) and Cita stepped into the ring first to do just that. The Irishman and the 13-year-old bay Holsteiner mare (Casall x Pik Ramiro) sailed over the finish line, setting the pace after clear penalty-free performance of 36.76 seconds that could not be beat.

It was a one-two for Ireland as Conor Swail (IRL) and GK Coco Chanel (Clarimo x Lerano) matched the winner’s double clear, finishing second only due to their jump-off time of 37.28 seconds.

Nikolaj Hein Ruus (DEN) and Crusador Z (Chacco-Blue x Lacorado) rounded out the top three with no penalties, going through the timers in 38.15 seconds during the tiebreaker.

“It can work to your advantage you’re not chasing anybody else, you kind of do your own thing.” – Daniel Coyle (IRL) on going first in the jump off.
