Adding Up to Victory: Conor Swail & Theo 160 Claim Speed Challenge CSI 4* at Thunderbird

Langley, Canada โ€“ May 21, 2026 โ€“ In most speed rounds, victory is found where riders dare to leave out strides. Conor Swail (IRL) and his longtime partner Theo 160 took a different routeโ€”they added them. And still won.

The Irish veteran and his 14-year-old Holsteiner gelding stopped the clock at 61.73 seconds in Thursdayโ€™s CSI 4* Table A 1.45m, edging Canadaโ€™s Amy Millar (CAN) and Christiano (62.24) and USAโ€™s Kyle King (USA) aboard Odysseus (63.33). But the winning time came as a genuine surprise to Swail, who watched his rivals roll forward and assumed he couldnโ€™t match their speed.

โ€œI was a wee bit surprised, honestly, to see how quick his time was,โ€ said Swail.

โ€œI watched James [Chawke], I watched Kyle, I watched Amyโ€”and they were moving. Iโ€™m like, I canโ€™t do those steps. There wasnโ€™t any leave outs.โ€

Instead, he relied on Theoโ€™s quick footwork and tight turning to carve out fractions others couldnโ€™t find.

โ€œIt was one of those rounds where the whole way around everything came up good for me,โ€ he continued. โ€œTheo is very efficient, he moves the legs quickly. He hasnโ€™t the biggest step, but he turned beautifully.

โ€œI think he was just so fast and efficient and very good everywhere. It thankfully made me just that little bit quicker.โ€

The Langley crowd has watched Swail and Theo 160 rewrite record books for years. According to Jumpr Stats, the pair have amassed 74 international podium finishes since 2021, with 31 of those being victories. At this stage of Theoโ€™s career, Swail aims the speedy chestnut at competitive 1.45m classesโ€”and the gelding keeps delivering.

โ€œObviously, heโ€™s getting a little older, but heโ€™s been such a servant for me and wins so much,โ€ Swail said, noting that they picked up three wins at the Desert Winter Circuit over the winter and two second place finishes earlier this month in Mexico.

โ€œHeโ€™s such a great horse, so Iโ€™m lucky to have him.โ€

Next week, Swail will do double duty for the Irish team. With regular chef dโ€™equipe Jessica Kรผrten occupied at Aachen, Swail will step into the role of chef dโ€™equipe and also ride for Team Ireland in the Nations Cup at tbirdโ€™s Odlum Brown BC Open.

โ€œJessica is busy with Aachen this week and La Baule next week,โ€ Swail explained. โ€œSheโ€™s given me the role of temporary chef dโ€™equipe. Iโ€™m looking really forward to that. Obviously, Iโ€™ve been coming here doing [the Nations Cup] for a long time and Iโ€™ve done many, many Nations Cups in my career. The few other guys, theyโ€™re a bit more inexperiencedโ€”hopefully I can give them a bit of good advice and keep them all happy.โ€

CSI4* competition continues this week at tbird with Thursdayโ€™s $20,000ย Challenge 1.45m and Fridayโ€™s $62,500 Qualifier 1.50m, building to the $117,000 Grand Prix on Sunday at 2pm. Tickets are available at exclusivelyย tbird.ca/tickets.
