Sociedade Hípica Portuguesa Prepares to Host the 101st Editon of the CSIO 3* of Lisbon

Lisbon, Portugal – May 21, 2026 – The countdown to the Al Shira’aa CSIO Lisbon has officially begun. From May 22 to 24, Sociedade Hípica Portuguesa will once again become the epicentre of show jumping after three years of absence, hosting a very special edition: the 101st edition of one of the most historic competitions on the European equestrian calendar.

With over a century of history, Sociedade Hípica Portuguesa stands as one of the leading references in equestrian sport in Portugal. Given the heritage and sporting value of its facilities, an extensive improvement and modernisation plan has been carried out in recent months across several areas of the venue, with the aim of adapting it to the technical and logistical demands of a high-level international event such as the CSIO.

These works have been promoted by the Organising Committee — formed by Oxer Sport and Sociedade Hípica Portuguesa — reflecting their joint commitment to ensuring that every aspect of the venue is fully prepared to welcome riders, teams, sponsors and spectators under the highest international standards.

Infrastructure Upgrades & Modernisation

One of the main areas of work focused on the truck parking zone, where electrical infrastructure, lighting systems, and connection panels were upgraded to meet current standards required by vehicles used in international competitions. In addition, the surface was improved to optimise circulation and ensure greater stability and safety.

New Base for the Stabling area

In the stabling area, significant work was carried out to enable the installation of temporary boxes compliant with FEI requirements. A new concrete base was built, enhancing both functionality and the comfort of horses and participating teams.

Extensive Work on the Arenas

Both competition and warm-up arenas underwent an intensive maintenance and improvement programme. On the grass arena, specific restoration works were carried out, including aeration, sand application, irrigation, and the addition of organic matter. In the sand arenas, the footing was reinforced to ensure optimal sporting conditions.

A New Show Office

A new show office has been installed in the riders’ grandstand, designed to meet the organisational needs of the Al Shira´aa CSIO. This intervention created a more functional and suitable workspace while also modernising the supporting electrical infrastructure.

Upgrade of Services & Electrical Systems

In preparation for the event, a comprehensive review of various electrical panels and installations across the venue was also conducted, strengthening the operational capacity of key areas such as offices, hospitality, catering, commercial spaces, and food truck zones.

Renovation of Access Routes & Common Areas

Another highly visible improvement was the upgrading of internal roads, access points, and parking areas, with resurfacing and refurbishment works aimed at optimising vehicle circulation and enhancing the experience for participants and visitors.

In addition, some pedestrian areas have regained Lisbon’s distinctive identity through the incorporation of traditional Portuguese pavement design.

Enhancement of Historic Structures

The spectator and riders’ stands were also subject to refurbishment and aesthetic enhancement works, including cleaning, painting, and the renewal of various elements, with the aim of reinforcing the venue’s image while preserving its historic character.

All these improvements will allow Sociedade Hípica Portuguesa to host this particularly significant edition of the Al Shira’aa CSIO Lisbon under the best possible conditions, combining tradition, history, and modernity in one of the most iconic settings in international equestrian sport.
