Langley, British Columbia, Canada โ May 21, 2025 โ Six years ago, Ariel Grangeโs Farrel proved himself a winner at Thunderbird Show Park. He was just 9 years old on that occasion. Now, at age 15, the Dutch Warmblood gelding (Cardento 933 x Stakkato) made an impressive comeback back to the winnerโs circle again, topping the $31,100 Tbird Speed Challenge CSI 4* – 1.45m on opening day of the Canadian Premier.
Olympian Daniel Coyle (IRL) has piloted the horse for the majority of its jumping career, and they seem to be hitting their stride in 2025. The pair came out late in the order of Wednesdayโs class, challenging the 59.61 second time set by Kara Chad (CAN) and Corinna Z that seemed nearly impossible to beat.ย
Farrel proved that wrong. Racing around the Fort Grand Prix Arena, Coyle and Farrel clocked in just over a tenthย of a second faster at 59.45, narrowly edging the longtime leader into second. Kyle King (USA)ย finished third with Odysseus in 60.10.

โHe likes winning classes, I guess,โ Coyle remarked of Farrel’s recent form. โHeโs been a great horse. Iโve been riding him since he was 7 years old. He was very successful here at this venue when he was 9 years old. He won the World Cup here and jumped the Nations Cup here very successfully for Ireland.โ
The reason he hasnโt been winning all along? Farrel had a bit of a setback.
โHe had an injury that put him out of the sport and it didnโt look like he was coming back,โ Coyle explained. โHe had four years out, which was crazy, and we didnโt really believe he would come back. Ariel had found somebody who could do a surgery to make him better, just so he could have a better life as a retired horse.โ
Post surgery, Farrel was feeling better than ever.

โThe vet was there one day and she said, โI think you should try again,โโ Coyle continued. โIf thereโs one thing about this little horse itโs that he loves doing what he does. Otherwise he wouldnโt do it. Heโs smaller than any other horse out there, but he doesn’t believe that.โ
The run of form between Farrelโs comeback and nowโthe pair has jumped to 7 international podium finishes, including 3 wins, this year alone (Jumpr stats)โhas helped propel Coyle to 14th in the world rankings.ย

โHeโs one of my top horses again right now,โ he reflected on Farrelโs position in his string. โIโve probably won more classes this year on him than any other horse. I need him if I want to try to stay at the top. He wasnโt there for a long time but Iโm really reaping the benefits of having him back.โ
Coyle is thrilled to be back in Langley, especially when it comes with a win. โAriel also is a big fan of Thunderbird,โ he shared. โItโs been a great show for me over the years with Arielโs horses and with some of my own horses. Iโm happy to be back.โ
With two top mounts in town for the Canadian Premier, Coyle will jump both in Fridayโs $62,500 Grand Prix Qualifier CSI 4* – 1.50m to assess which horse will go forth in Sundayโs $116,050 Grand Prix CSI 4* – 1.55m.
โNext week we have the Nations Cup for Ireland, which probably will be Farrel,โ he said. โItโs been a long time since we did it but he really likes the grass field here. If the weather stays good, weโll be going in the Nations Cup.โ
FEI competition resumes Thursday with the $20,000 Tbird Challenge CSI 4* – 1.45m.
