Ocala, Florida, USA – July 11, 2024 – The fifth week of the 2024 Summer Series is in full swing at World Equestrian Center – Ocala. Early this morning in the $24,000 C. Jarvis Insurance Welcome Prix, 28 horse-and-rider combinations showcased their skills over a welcoming track built by FEI Level III course designer Manuel Esparza (MEX). The competition was fierce, with the top placings separated by mere tenths of a second. Ultimately, it was Sharn Wordley (NZL) who clinched victory aboard his new partner Hagelin (Stolzenberg x Graf Grannus), owned by Della Wordley.
Sharn Wordley (IRL) and Hagelin were the third pair to return for the jump-off out of a field of 11. Wordley praised Hagelin’s natural speed and adjustability, saying, “He’s so naturally fast. Right now, he’s learning to go faster and faster, and what’s amazing about him is he doesn’t look that fast. His stride is really long, and he’s extremely careful, so you can come at verticals very fast. And he has a really good range, so if you jump a jump slower, you can then extend and leave a stride out, which is really cool. He’s so fast because his brakes are so good.”
Detailing his jump-off strategy, Wordley explained, “I did 10 from one to two, and then I planned 12 to the oxer and nine in the rollback because at the moment, I am taking my time with the rollbacks because he can get a little surprised. But he’s so adjustable, I was able to get the forward seven across the diagonal and did nine to the double and a slow seven coming home.”
The pair flew through the timers in a blistering 36.209 seconds, a time that proved unbeatable.
Close behind with a time of 36.336 seconds, Dominique Damico (USA) and Amberfax Farm, Inc.’s 13-year-old Oldenburg gelding Cava (Cadensky x Licara) earned the second-place ribbon.
Rodrigo Lambre (BRA) and his own For Follow PS (For Pleasure x Chenny), a nine-year-old Oldenburg gelding, secured third place with a time of 36.367 seconds.
Wordley is excited about his future with the talented 12-year-old Hanoverian gelding. “I got him in the beginning of the winter. He was produced as a six-year-old by Erin Haas. He’s very temperamental, so we are just starting to form a partnership now,” he shared. “When he’s on form and his brain is in gear, and not scared of the screens or the lights, he’s fantastic. I think now, we are going to start having way better classes than not. He’s such an incredible horse to ride, and I am looking forward to continuing our progress.”
