It’s Ride, White & Blue! Parade of Americans Shine on the Fourth of July at Spruce Meadows

Spruce Meadows, Calgary, Alberta, Canada โ€” July 04, 2024 โ€” It was a sea of red, white, and blue as Americans Nicholas Dello Joio (USA) on Cornetโ€™s Cambridge, and Elena Haas (USA), with Claude, came first and second in Thursdayโ€™s Fourth of July Jayman Built Cup CSI 5*.

The 1.55m International Ring competition โ€” the qualifier for this summerโ€™s biggest Grand Prix event on Saturday โ€” started with 64 but was whittled down to just nine jump-off finalists, with Mexicoโ€™s Patricio Pasquel (MEX) and Chakkalou PS arriving third.

The top 40 riders from todayโ€™s event will advance to the ATCO Queen Elizabeth II Cup, where Dello Joio will follow the same advice his show jumping legend father, Norman, gave him today, for guiding Cornetโ€™s Cambridge.

โ€œDad was basically like, you know, put him in drive and keep him in cruise control,โ€ Dello Joio, 35, said.

โ€œHe loves galloping on that big open field. I mean, especially in the second round, he didnโ€™t really have to try. You just kind of turn him loose at his own natural pace.

โ€œHeโ€™s big but he moves like a thoroughbred. Itโ€™s unbelievable for such a big horse. Heโ€™s so light on his feet, which makes him catlike in those jump-offs.

โ€œHeโ€™s fast enough without any gas on the fire.โ€

Dello Joio, who is back in top form following surgeries on both hips and his groin just last year, planned to mark his Fourth of July win sensibly.

He said: โ€œNo celebrating tonight. Weโ€™ll be back out here tomorrow morning. Weโ€™ve got another big day ahead.โ€

But there was room for a little fun, as Dello Joio made a cheeky dig at his Canadian hosts, referring to last monthโ€™s Edmonton Oilers loss in the Stanley Cup finals.

โ€œI think between this and the Panthers winning the Cup, Iโ€™m pretty happy being up here in Canada,โ€ said Dello Joio, who is from Wellington, Florida.
