Erynn Ballard Does it Again with One-Two Finish in the $38,700 Fidelity Investments Challenge CSI 4*

North Salem, New York, USA โ€“ May 18, 2024ย โ€“ย Canadaโ€™s Erynn Ballard (CAN) returned to the winnerโ€™s circle at the Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Shows on Saturday, finishing in first and second place in theย $38,700 Jump-off Challenge CSI 4*, presented by Fidelity Investments. She stopped the clock on the winning time of 35.61 seconds withย Ginger Askย and followed closely behind in 36.17 seconds withย Coconet.

Theย Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Showsย are one of the premier stops on the nationโ€™s hunter-jumper horse show circuit, offering a full schedule of world-class competitionย May 7-12ย andย May 14-19ย that features the nationโ€™s best in equestrian sport.ย

Erynn Ballard (CAN) & Ginger Ask

Ballard bested a field of 48 horse-and-rider combinations representing seven countries in Saturdayโ€™s $38,700 FEI 1.45m Jump-off presented by Fidelity Investments, where course designer Alan Wade (IRL) set a sweeping 15-effort track for the initial round. Nineteen pairs returned to jump off for top honors, and Ballardโ€™s two mounts โ€“Ilan Ferderโ€™s 10-year-old Holsteiner mareย Ginger Askย and Wight Show Stables LLCโ€™s 10-year-old Oldenburg mareย Coconetย โ€“ proved to be the ones to beat.

Erynn Ballard (CAN) & Coconet

โ€œWhen I came out of the ring onย Coconet, I said to Ilan that I gave the class away from #1 to #2,โ€ Ballard said. โ€œIf youโ€™re counting strides, which we do in the jump-off, I did nine strides there after she jumped #1 a bit high and I just didnโ€™t get my balance in time to turn her away from the gate. After we jumped #2, I went quite fast everywhere else, but then onย Ginger, I did that same early turn in seven. I guess thatโ€™s the advantage of having two fast horses โ€“ you can do better on the second than you did on the first.

โ€œEven though I took the lead onย Ginger, I knew I had Conor Swail (IRL) behind me, and heโ€™s as fast as anyone in the world,โ€ she added. โ€œI wanted to make sure that I had to make him work for it. Today, it worked out in my favor. He had one down, and we ended up first and second.โ€ย

Ballard has been developing her mares for the last year alongside Ferder, and Saturday markedย Gingerโ€™s first FEI win. โ€œI know these two girls quite well,โ€ she said. โ€œIlanโ€™s the one in charge of their training and regular schooling, so Iโ€™m usually following his ride. We actually have a gray girl gang at the moment โ€“ three or four gray mares, all 10-year-olds, all horses that I get on and ask, โ€˜How can I be so lucky to ride?โ€™โ€

Raleigh Hiler (USA) & Cassina 64

Rounding out the top five placings were three Americans: Raleigh Hiler (USA) in third with Kurt Hilerโ€™s 15-year-old Oldenburg mareย Cassina 64ย (0/0/36.77), Alex Matz in fourth with 5 Star Partnersโ€™ 11-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallionย Ikigaiย (0/0/36.89), and Megan McDermott in fifth with Counter Balance LLCโ€™s 9-year-old Belgian Warmblood geldingย Paddington Du Royaumeย (0/0/36.98).
