Patricio Pasquel & Babel Blaze to Victory in $75,000 Friends of the Meadows CSI 5* at Spruce Meadows

Spruce Meadows, Calgary, Alberta, Canada – September 2, 2022 – Friday marked the final day of qualifier competitions for athletes hoping to compete this weekend. The $75,000 Friends of the Meadows CSI 5* 1.55m was the final qualifying competition for Sunday’s $400,700 Friends of the Meadows Grand Prix CSI 5*, presented by Rolex. It was a two horse jump-off between two great riders, Patricio Pasquel (MEX) and Nayel Nassar (EGY), both having recently competed at the 2022 World Championships in Herning, Denmark.

Pasquel with Babel, his great 15-year-old Mexican Sport Horse (CCDM) gelding (Billy du Lys x Highflyer), inched out Nassar (EGY) riding Coronado (San Patrignano Cassini x Acord II), posting the winning clear ride in a time of 39.59 seconds, compared to the Egyptian’s mark of 41.43 seconds.

One unlucky time-penalty kept Captain Brian Cournane (USA) and Armik (Armitage 2 x Justinian) from qualifying to the jump-off but their first round time of 76.80 seconds was more than enough to secure them the third spot on the podium.

Final Results – $75,000 Friends of the Meadows CSI 5*

1) Patricio Pasquel (MEX) & Babel – 0 / 0 – 39.59

2) Nayel Nassar (EGY) & Coronado – 0 / 0 – 41.43
