Calgary, Canada – June 14, 2019 – Luck seems to have nothing to do with it when it comes to the Irish winning at the 2019 Spruce Meadows Summer Series and it was no different yesterday when Dermott Lennon (IRL) and MJM Pursuit won the $40,000 Alta Gas Cup CSI 5*.
Forty-three athletes representing eleven nations took to Meadows on the Green for the 1.45m jump-off challenge. Among them were five Irish riders, each with multiple top placings from this year’s Summer Series Tournaments. Nine horse/rider combinations made it through round one with no jumping penalties and proceeded to the jump off. The competition was tough with riders taking risks hoping they would pay off and land them at the top of the leader board.
Dermott Lennon (IRL) was third last to go in the jump off and was itching for a win. Aboard MJM Pursuit, the Irishman and the 10-year-old Irish Sport Horse (Aldato x Limmerick) posted a clear round with a quick time of 35.11 seconds to claim first place.
Darragh Kenny (IRL), who has had multiple trips to the winner’s circle this summer, did his best to catch Lennon but came up short aboard Scarlett du Sart Z (Stakkato x First Bride) with a time of 35.69 seconds.
Nikolaj Hein Ruus (DEN) & Chili Pepper SM
Nikolaj Hein Ruus (DEN) was consistent once again, guiding Chili Pepper SM (Calido x Graf Stop) to third place with no penalties, stopping the timers in 36.81 seconds during the decisive phase.
