Calgary, Alberta, Canada – June 10, 2019 – Twenty horse/rider combinations from eleven nations started the $36,100 RBC Capital Markets Cup CSI 5* to round out last Friday’s competitions in the International Ring during the ‘National’ at Spruce Meadows. The technical 1.50m track was navigated without error by five of the riders who produced clear rounds and advanced to the jump off.
Darragh Kenney (IRL) rose to the occasion aboard Romeo 88, guiding the 10-year-old Zangersheide gelding (Contact van de Heffinck x Orland) towards a clear jump off round and a time of 44.33 seconds – fast enough to secure first place.
Mexican rider Nicolas Pizzaro (MEX) and Fabrice DN first into the jump-off and laid down a clear steady round with a time of 50.06 seconds putting pressure on the remaining competitors, eventually finishing in second place.
Scott Keach (AUS) and Born to be Picobello Z (Berlin x Carthago Z) had one rail down for 4 penalty-points in the decisive phase, still managing to secure third place after crossing the finish line in 55.04 seconds.
“The first round course was tough, there wasn’t so many clears but it was a good jump off my horse really felt on point. I’ve only had him (Romeo 88) for five months but I think the sky is the limit.” – Darragh Kenney (IRL) on his horse Romeo 88.
