The Lafarge Cavalry Charge, the final leg of the 2018 Cavalry Charge Speed Series, started the final day of the Spruce Meadows ‘North American’ CSI5*, presented by Rolex. Thirty-eight horse/rider combinations took on the track with current speed series point leader Rodrigo Lambre (BRA) and Chapilot set last to enter the ring.
Known by some as the “Master of the Faster”, Richard Spooner (USA) is always a force to be reckon with and yesterday was no exception.
The American and Arthos R were contenders throughout the series and a tight turn back to the final line would land Spooner and the 13-year-old Dutch Warmblood stallion (Namelus R x Mermus R) at the top of the leaderboard for good, with no penalties and a time of 75.680 seconds.
Eduardo Menezes (BRA) & Caruschka 2 (Caspar x Continue) led much of the way, finishing second backed by their penalty-free effort in 76.150 seconds.
Rich Fellers (USA) & Steelbi (VDL Empire x Stanford) registered the fastest time (75.010 seconds) among all participants, finishing second even with one rail down and four seconds added to their final time, giving them a final time of 79.010 seconds.
Lambre would have a rail and finish in fifth but still collect enough overall points to become the 2018 Cavalry Charge Speed Series Champion.
